Introduction
The Department of English was established in 2012. Currently the department offers BS English four-year program. The department also intends to launch MS/M.Phil (Language and Literature) program in near future. The department assists other departments of the University by offering interdisciplinary courses, e.g. Functional English, Academic writing and communication skills. The curriculum of the above mentioned program and courses have been designed following HEC recommendations and new trends in the discipline of English. The syllabus provides an opportunity to the students to compete and excel with the growing need ofthe market. Ever since its genesis, the department has been vivacious in all its academic activities. It is an excellent English Language and Literature learning centre fulfilling the needs of diverse range of students by focusing on their personal, academic and professional grooming.
The vision of the Department of English at BKUC is to provide state of the art education that enables the new generation to meet the challenges of the future by reading professional writers, and to polish their creative and critical production and presentation.
- The mission of the English department at BKUC is to foster learning and appreciation of English studies. With its focus on Literatures in English, Linguistics, and ELT, the department strives to prepare graduate and undergraduate students, in affirmation with Bacha Khan University’s values, to not only excel in the respective domains but also to be responsible members of the community.
- We offer BS and MA programs in English. Our BS students looking for a great interdisciplinary education are offered courses like Psychology, History of Pashtu Language and Literature, Philosophy, IT skills, and Sociology. Besides, across the span of eight semesters, they are provided with a variety of introductory courses to Literature, Linguistics, and ELT, to orient them toward a field of specialization for their graduate studies. The MA program, spanning across two years offers a balance of Linguistics and Literature courses.
- Our Undergraduate program is designed to reflect the contemporary paradigm shift towards postcolonial and cross-cultural studies. This can be seen in the diverse and global nature of the syllabus which includes not only canonical Anglo-American Literatures but also courses on Pakistani Literature in English, South Asian Literatures in English and Contemporary Muslim Narratives. Our innovative modules on Comparative Literature, Critical Theory in the Postmodern Era, Literature and Ideology and Popular Fiction introduce an exciting interdisciplinary component where literature is studied in juxtaposition with art, film, philosophy, theory, psychology, history, translation, cultural and gender studies. In addition, we aim to provide students with a thorough grounding in the theoretical study of language through courses related to various sub-specializations such as Sociolinguistics, Syntax, Semantics, Morphology, Pragmatics, Phonetics, Stylistics, Translation Studies and Discourse Studies.

Success Story of Syed Attia Bibi
Syed Attia Bibi, Lecturer at Department of English, had the honor to present at TESOL convention and English Language Expo held recently in March 2023 in Portland, Oregon, USA. She was among the 20 candidates selected from the entire country by US Embassy Islamabad and Regional English Language Office to attend the conference.
TESOL is one of the biggest English Language conferences in the world and is held annually in the United States of America. Syed Attia won the fully funded sponsorship from US Embassy to attend TESOL 2023 and she is the first ever person in the history of the Department of English to participate in any international event outside the country. Attending the convention and presenting at the conference is not only a big achievement for Syed Attia but for the Department of English as well.
